- [BAMBA] Heeyong Eun (BA MBA 2024) | KPMG Samjong Accounting Corp.
- Enrolling in the Business Analytics MBA program was prompted by my current role in IT consulting. My aim was to enhance my comprehension of business within the IT sector and swiftly grasp emerging technologies. The MBA program facilitated a broader understanding of business through modules in accounting, marketing, and customer analysis. Real-life case studies and discussions provided practical insights applicable to my work. Conducted entirely in English, the classes gradually mitigated my aversion to technical documents and original texts, fostering a conducive environment for self-directed learning. Throughout the program, the standout elements were the distinguished professors and the camaraderie with classmates. Globally recognized professors imparted up-to-date knowledge, fostering creative thinking through discussions and group activities. The interactive nature of classes allowed for continuous application of experiences, solidifying the learning process. The bonds formed with classmates during the two years of shared challenges and opinions have evolved into lifelong friendships through which we continue to support each other's growth. The program not only enriched my theoretical knowledge but also provided practical experiences. Participation in ICDM and AI competitions, with support from professors, showcased the program's commitment to hands-on learning. The gold medal from SW Architecture Competition significantly contributed to my personal development. Additionally, the program played a pivotal role in my career progression, I have been promoted and transferred to a role based on data analysis at a global consulting firm. This company offers opportunities for relocation to the United States and growth in the field of AI, and I am striving to apply what I learned in school to my actual work. On reflection, the MBA program served as a gateway to diverse career paths, offering avenues to become a data engineer, AI engineer, or business analyst. Its flexibility allows for a deeper dive into areas aligned with individual goals and strengths. The MBA, like a versatile card, enables a transformative career shift through dedication and effort.

- [EMBA] [Alumni Interview] Kim Dong Won (Indiana-Kelley-SKK GSB EMBA, 2021)
- [Maeil Business Newspaper - Alumni Interview] "Twice career jump after Kelley - SKK GSB EMBA." Kim Dongwon, Executive MBA class of 2021 I have worked in various global corporations such as the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea, Pfizer, and Philip Morris International for over 20 years, primarily in roles related to international cooperation and policy. Currently, I serve as the Executive Vice President for External Affairs at Moderna, a global pharmaceutical company producing COVID-19 vaccines using mRNA technology. There were three key reasons for choosing this MBA program. Firstly, it was particularly appealing because it was the only EMBA program in Korea conducted entirely in English. Given the necessity of English communication skills in building a career in multinational corporations, I believe that Kelley – SKK GSB EMBA, with its 100% English instruction and a majority of foreign professors, would be immensely beneficial. Secondly, compared to the usual two-year MBA programs, it offered the advantage of obtaining a world-class MBA degree within a relatively shorter period of 1.5 years, which was crucial for executives balancing work and career management. Lastly, the Dual MBA aspect was pivotal. Being able to attend classes from both Sungkyunkwan University's SKK GSB and Indiana University's Kelley School of Business professors while based in Korea had a decisive impact on my choice. Looking back three years after graduation, it was a truly excellent decision. Over 70% of my fellow graduates, who embarked on this journey with me, have achieved remarkable results, either by securing better positions at new companies or receiving promotions within their current organizations. This clearly demonstrates the significant contribution of the Kelley – SKK GSB EMBA program to the career development of its students. In my case, I successfully transitioned to new roles twice after completing my MBA and received promotions each year for the past three years. My salary has also seen a significant increase in proportion. The Kelley – SKK GSB EMBA program played a substantial role in these achievements. Firstly, the MBA credential itself created a highly positive image during job interviews. It was not just the name value of Kelley – SKK GSB EMBA but also the perception that completing an MBA program while working demonstrates commitment and dedication. Secondly, the MBA network was invaluable. I received substantial support from my MBA peers and alumni in terms of advice and references during each job transition. This aspect becomes even more influential as you climb the corporate ladder. Lastly, the program provided continuous motivation. Before entering the program, I was already on an executive track and wasn't actively seeking new challenges or opportunities. However, during the MBA journey, I couldn't help but be inspired by the highly capable, passionate, and diverse individuals I encountered. After working in the same field for over two decades, it's natural to become complacent and lose sight of new dreams and opportunities. The EMBA period allowed me to meet experts and professionals from different fields, engage in discussions, and constantly strive to set higher goals for myself. One of the most rewarding aspects of completing the program was the friendships I formed with 32 colleagues who share similar values and goals, and these are friendships that will last a lifetime. In fact, just last weekend, I went on a 1-night, 2-day trip with four of these families. Unlike other connections, MBA classmates, who share similar objectives and thoughts, quickly form strong bonds. The network I gained during this journey holds exceptional value. The Kelley – SKK GSB EMBA program is an ideal choice for professionals looking to take their careers to the next level. It is particularly appealing to executives and CEOs in multinational corporations or major domestic companies. Among my fellow graduates, some have relocated to overseas headquarters or ventured into new fields using the knowledge gained from the EMBA program. I highly recommend this program to those who seek to meet a 'better version of themselves.'. Original Article (Korean): https://www.mk.co.kr/news/special-edition/10837477

- [EMBA] Lucinda Walker (EMBA 2021, British Chamber of Korea)
- Lucinda Walker (EMBA 2021, Executive Director, British Chamber of Korea) Internationalized program Learned diverse perspectives I wanted to do an MBA in Korea because Korea is one of the most innovative countries, and my colleagues and friends in Korea spoke highly of their experience of studying at Korean universities. In particular, the IU Kelley–SKK GSB Executive MBA program is a globalized EMBA program in Korea, so I was immediately drawn to it. In this course, I learned many different perspectives from professors and classmates from countries as diverse as China, India, Korea, Sweden, and the US. Useful business courses filled with practical approaches. In the course Global Business Environment, the professor taught us complicated macroeconomic concepts in an engaging and accessible way. In Business Strategy, the professor used various online tools to engage us in a fascinating inquiry-based learning experience. He demonstrated to us that online education can be exciting, too. I learned to identify and manage risks and opportunities. The Executive MBA program has made me more confident because I now understand many more business concepts, and I know how to develop strategy and to identify risks and opportunities. Thanks to this EMBA program, I am more confident. Now I feel like I have a lot of options, and am excited about my future.

- [EMBA] Kyoungho Park (EMBA 2021, World Bank Group)
- Kyoungho Park (EMBA 2021, World Bank Group) I'm currently working at the World Bank's Washington headquarters to inform private investors of the government guarantee program in developing countries. My role comprises analyzing potential businesses, and evaluating risks to help investors succeed in their investments. Before my MBA, I was in charge of overseas private investment projects in a Korean construction company. These were Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects. I went on multiple business trips to developing countries, which forged my desire to contribute to the public sector by working in international institutions. To that end, I decided to join the IU Kelley–SKK GSB Executive MBA program. The EMBA program is designed to improve students’ strengths and to identify and improve upon their weaknesses. Therefore, if students lack basic knowledge, they can still learn and improve step by step. In my case, I learned what I needed to develop as a successful leader through studying subjects such as leadership, human resources management, and communication. I was not confident in these fields prior to taking the course. Memorable moments and great advantages In particular, I found the course greatly advantageous because SKK GSB runs a joint course with IU Kelley School of Business, which is one of the most prestigious business schools in the US. One of my most memorable moments from my studies was when I attended Prof. Daniel Beneish's course face to face. He devised the ‘Beneish Model’, which I had studied when preparing for my CFA - the Chartered Financial Analyst certificate. So, meeting Prof. Beneish in person was a heartwarming experience. I also fostered a valuable network of fellow students. I daresay that SKK GSB EMBA graduates have professionalism and sophisticated social skills. When I was in class with them, I could often feel intense energy. My peer who held another Master's said once that he had studied in another school, but he had never seen this intense proactiveness in participating in projects and in sharing opinions in discussions. It is no exaggeration to say that studying the EMBA has changed my life. It paved the way for my dream goal, and made me feel confident. Through the EMBA, I came to think, 'I'm a person who can show my value anywhere.'

- - How what you learned during your MBA program has contributed towards my work In an assignment in the Product Service Design course, we selected a company, and drew a product life cycle and roadmap to propose a new business model. In that assignment, I analyzed the initial model, and successful and unsuccessful projects by investigating personal mobility companies that have various products. After that, I suggested future business strategies such as localization and subscription. Another notable course was the Project Workshop. In that course, we had regular meetings with actual tech startup managers to discuss product strategies and mid-to-long-term operation plans, and we devised improvement roadmaps. I’m certain that this experience of analyzing and discussing business models, and formulating differentiation strategies with actual CEOs and CTOs was a great help in expanding my business perspectives. These classes have assisted me a lot in the process of strategic decision-making, and have helped me to create the innovative outcomes required in my job. - Advice to prospective applicants who are considering an MBA In a rapidly-changing world, I believe that it is crucial to differentiate our strengths, and to develop excellent problem-solving skills. Now I am sure that I’m sure that an MBA is not only a platform for acquiring the knowledge of business and economics, but also a place to redefine our careers and directions in life by reflecting on ourselves.

- - How what you learned during your MBA program has contributed towards my work I’d say the most helpful things that I learned on the course fall into two groups: theory and practice. Theoretically, there were many things that I could apply directly to business situations, so I experienced their effectiveness straight away. In particular, the Digital Marketing course helped me understand the digital marketing ecosystem. This course included a lot of useful simulations, and these helped me to understand the practical impact of optimizing the customer journey, to appreciate various perspectives of performance analysis, and to learn channel strategy. Thanks to the Marketing Analysis course, I could increase my access to marketing data with R-Programming. On this course, we analyzed data from various; we used vast amounts of data, and then we found optimal clustering criteria during the customer clustering process. I found this especially interesting, and later, when I was analyzing customer data in a real business situation, I could determine the criteria for applicability and confidence of data more quantitatively. Regarding practice, the most striking phrase that springs to mind is “speak out effectively”. My classmates had a range of experiences, jobs, and backgrounds, so by discussing and presenting with them, I developed creative problem-solving skills. These skills were helpful in real business situations as I could convey my opinions more concisely and efficiently. Since all of SKK GSB’s classes are in English, it closely modeled a real international business environment, and by using my classmates’ strengths as benchmarks, I found the global nature of the experience valuable. - The biggest challenge you encountered on the MBA course It takes a lot of energy and effort physically and mentally to take the classes, to work on assignments, and to get through the exams, all at the same time as working. Taking this course involves a lot of case reading materials and assignments every week, so it was far from easy to balance all those tasks while working, but with motivation from my classmates, I could manage the classes and assignments without major issues. The MBA course has a lot of group assignments, and we grew together by learning from other members' strengths, by helping them with their shortcomings, and by maximizing and building on each other's abilities. This helped us to overcome our challenges. - Advice to prospective applicants who are considering an MBA I think prospective students should clarify their needs and expectations after graduating with an MBA. Even if students enroll with a strong will, some may lose sight of their original goal or withdraw because there are a lot of challenges. Yet if students clearly know what they want to achieve, then they are more able to overcome these challenges with their classmates. Remember you aren’t alone: the other students on the course are invariably keen to develop themselves even in difficult situations, and you’re all in the same boat, so everyone tends to help each other very well. I’d say that applicants who take an MBA after considering these points carefully will find the content, process, and methodology that they learn a great benefit as they grow into thriving business professionals.

- - Why SKK GSB I decided to do an MBA early in my career because if I were to become a CEO, then it would be important for me to understand my business comprehensively, and to ground my expertise. I also wanted to expand my knowledge of finance, marketing, and strategy. I chose SKK GSB because it has a world-class faculty and opportunities to study in other world-class business schools. Moreover, all classes in SKK GSB are taught in English, ensuring global competence. - How did the MBA contribute to your work? If you do one job for a long time, your perspective can narrow, though of course you become an expert in certain fields. With my MBA, I supplemented my one-sidedness. I learned how to see the whole picture while honing my skills in one area. I also learned how my job contributes to the whole process of my company’s business. Then, I naturally applied my understanding to my job. Thanks to my studies at SKK GSB, I improved my communication skills with other teams because I had broadened my point of view in business. - What challenges did you experience while doing the MBA? The MBA lifestyle—working during the day, and studying at night—demands a lot of energy. I had to be good at keeping my body healthy and managing my time well. Luckily, I managed this, and I enjoyed my MBA life thanks to my cohort peers' positive energy and passion.

- The first strength of this course is practicality. In general, what you learn in graduate school differs from on-site work, but in this program analysis techniques based on programming such as Python, R, and SQL are practical and applicable in the field. In particular, in the new-normal era caused by COVID-19, I believe it will become more important to have analysis capabilities based on programming. The second strength relates to the excellent and passionate faculty, to class operation, and to the curriculum at the highly professional home of Korea's No. 1 MBA in Korea. Another reason for choosing this course is the opportunity to study at one of the globally top-ranking business schools that are collaborating with SKK GSB. In short, this program is practical for many modern business people's needs and desires.

- Although big data will lead to technological advances in AI, competition among companies is also expected to occur in a completely different way. Who will get to interpret the market with big data more accurately? Isn't this the key to determining who will win in competition? I believe that by completing this course, you will be able to become a marketing expert who communicates clearly based on data. It seems to me that this is the only course in which you can learn converging management and statistics, and even acquire skills that can be applied in practice. I communicate within my company in a completely different way now by applying what I learned through my studies. I came to understand that because of this course, I can now communicate on a more objective and professional basis, and grow into a company leader.

- Most of the knowledge that I learned from the MBA classes is directly helpful and effectively used in my work. I am in particular benefiting a lot from the first semester classes such as Management, Economics, Finance and Data Analysis. SKK GSB professors use various teaching methods to elevate student participation and encourage students to constantly question themselves while thinking critically. Thanks to this, I got used to thinking deeply, and giving opinions widely. After the MBA, I always took the initiative, and became confident in solving problems. Specifically, when I was recently analyzing social listening data in S-core, I applied the analytic skills that I learned in Prof. Yanbo Wang’s Quantitative Analysis class. When it comes to contracting, or when we need Win-Win negotiations, the client/partner acquisition skills from Prof. Adam Castor’s Negotiation class are of great help. I focus on the value of what I create when I work rather than just on the activity. I also try my best to help the company and our clients to develop. I highly recommend taking an MBA for anyone who wants a transition or career development. I developed my career and learned a lot more than I expected. I keep in touch with my friends from various fields and my professors at SKK GSB. While working at the Korea MBA Association, I often interacted with MBA students from other schools, and met many people at work even after we graduated. The MBA experience was an opportunity in my life where I reflected greatly on myself, and developed a lot as an individual.
