- Professor Gokce Basbug
- An out-of-the-box class to learn how to foster, manage and incentivize creativity. “You should try to be happy, you will learn more if you are happy”. These words opened the lesson, and were followed by an unexpected game. Suddenly students all around were laughing and enjoying themselves. This could pass for a social event, except it was an academic activity aiming to engrave certain concepts in the mind of the students. The fun classroom is the class of Creativity and Innovation taught by Professor Gökçe Başbuğ, at SKK GSB, Sungkyunkwan University. Soft skills are not easy to teach or learn but will have a significant impact on both professional and personal lives of students. In order to build these soft skills, this class engages students in different ways and allows them to experiment with both theoretical and practical methods, and overall, it is cognitively rewarding for the self-reflecting students. It would seem obvious for all of us to pursue happiness in our lives, and that every activity in which we get involved in seeks to take us to this goal. However, we seem to forget this often: we have a busy lifestyle and a high level of stress, fighting against the clock to achieve goals for which we feel no emotion. We must love what we do in order to excel in it is the first idea that is proposed in the course. Also, we need to realize that positive emotions are key to creativity and innovation. This is so evident and yet so ignored. “This class forced me to pause in my busy lifestyle and rethink things in a different way. I believe that creativity is something that we must cultivate daily, both to achieve excellence in the workplace, and the much-desired happiness in our personal lives. Sometimes we are so busy that we forget to just contemplate life to come up with new ideas,” said one student. “I certainly will not forget the importance of enjoying what you do to obtain excellent results. The class instills this in us and is so special that it becomes memorable,” said another student. After graduating from Istanbul University, Professor Başbuğ, earned an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. from MIT Sloan School of Management. He has been teaching MBA students at SKK GSB since 2017.

- MBA Survival Guide: 3 Tips for Your First Day
- MBA Survival Guide: 3 Tips for Your First Day Pursuing an MBA is an incredible journey and a gateway to furthering your career—but how do you make the most of your time? Over the next month, we’ll walk you through some of our favorite tips. This week, we wanted to start from the beginning: the first day of classes. Here are three tips for making the most of your first day. (1) Know Where You’re Going: This seems simple, but for many students it is their first-time stepping foot in their new home. We recommend you visit your classrooms a day early so you don’t risk getting lost. (2) Do the Reading: Not all courses have readings or assignments for the first day, but if they do, you certainly don’t want to miss them. Check over your syllabus carefully to make sure you’re fully prepared for the first day of classes. (3) Introduce Yourself: One of the greatest value adds of a top MBA program is the professional network you can build. From esteemed professors to talented fellow students, you should make an effort to get to know your class and faculty.

- MBA Team Sets Record with Investing Simulation
- MBA Team Sets Record with Investing Simulation The full-time MBA program wrapped up its Investing Simulation this semester with a bang, with one team of students earning a record-breaking 36 percent return. “Investing in the America stock market is very hard, sometimes making us stay up all night. But, it was great fun for me,” said winning team member Jiuk Myong. “We learned the investment world is somewhat different from what you learn in textbooks. This was a great chance to test our skills in the real world.” Students were organized in 8 teams, each competing with a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio of American securities. A staple of the MBA program, over the course of 10 weeks students put their skills to the test trading through the simulation.

- Applied Business Project(ABP) clients meeting
- Applied Business Project(ABP) clients meeting During the last few weeks, different groups of students met with their clients for the ABP project. The experience of consulting is new for some, and business as usual for others, but is exciting for everyone. “Getting to know the realities of the company and the struggles they face is really exciting; this is beyond any academics-only program”, is the general consensus. The meetings enable students to understand and analyze the issues a company is facing and come up with creative solutions. This opportunity should allow the students to test their academic knowledge in a business environment. The ABP is a program designed to let students experience a project of their preference. It is modeled along the lines of a consultancy and gives students the opportunity to have real experience with a company before graduation, under the guidance of a well-known professor as an advisor. The ABP is also a great opportunity for businesses to access highly motivated and well-prepared students who can advise their organizations. With each year, the ABP project has become very sought after, to the point that several businesses compete for acceptance.

- Marketing Simulation: Riding "up-hill"
- Marketing Simulation: Riding "up-hill" With only one round left, the Marketing Simulation game is about to end. The competition among the teams has been tough, but the in-game rivalry never hurt the amicable ambience of the MBA floor. Since the start of the year, eight teams have been sweating it out in a simulated arena. The game, played at an accelerated pace, is to build a world-class bicycle company from scratch. It provided an opportunity for the students to apply marketing theory learnt in class. Despite the knowledge and effort, the market is unforgiving and having the upper hand has not been easy in this tight competition. Nevertheless, the efforts have paid off as the students feel more confident about their knowledge through experience. “We’ve seen that competing is not easy, competitors are always seeking for a way to outdo other companies, and we learnt that we need to be very analytical to sort the information from the market and make sound decisions each round. Now we know much better where we failed, and we have learned from our mistakes. I am sure I am more capable now of delivering value to my employer”, said one student.

- Applied Business Project(ABP) Kick-off.
- Applied Business Project Kick-off. Let’s get down to work! The Applied Business Project (ABP) kick-off dinner took place on 30 Jan. Student groups met with representatives of real businesses to understand some of the issues facing them in the real world. The idea behind ABP is for student teams to analyze the issues and suggest solutions based on their MBA studies – a good way to combine theory and practice. “This is a great opportunity for us to get to know the industry, especially since some of us don’t have consultancy experience,” said one of the students. The ABP is a program designed to let students experience a project of their preference. It is developed along the lines of a consultancy and gives students the opportunity to have real experience with a company before graduation, under the guidance of a well-known professor as an advisor. The ABP is also a great opportunity for businesses to access highly motivated and well-prepared students who can refresh their organizations. With each year, the ABP project has become very sought after, to the point that several businesses compete for acceptance. The next four months are surely going to be challenging and a lot of work, but we are certain the outcome will be great for both parties!

- Start of a new semester!
- Start of a new semester! Last week, Full-Time MBA class started again at SKK GSB. For the class of 2020, the first semester is over and the second semester is just ahead. As one period closes so a new one starts. The last weeks of December were hectic with a full work load, but as soon as finals were over, students used their break time to relax, learn and explore. Many of the students went abroad, some to their home towns, others set out to explore Korea or even Asia. Friends that had worked hard together through the semester, were all enjoying the break in different ways. Students immediately immersed themselves in their studies at the opening of the class. Early next month, students will kick off Applied Business Projects (ABP), a field-based course in which they will participate in lectures from senior industry executives and tackle real-world consulting projects mentored by professors and industry experts. ABP will expose students to invaluable practical learning experiences which will grant them a major advantage in their job searches.
