Minhyoung Kim (FMBA 2013) – Hyundai Motor Company

FMBA

Minhyoung Kim, an alumnus of SKK GSB’s Full-Time MBA program, currently works as a senior manager in vehicle-to-grid business development at Hyundai Motor Company, aggregating EV batteries to smart-charge when power is cheap and supply energy when the grid is short—earning income for drivers and stability for the grid.

Before starting his MBA, Minhyoung worked as a senior consultant, where he was skilled at designing systems and processes. However, he found himself asking a fundamental business question: how much would an investment actually be worth to the company? This led him to seek a more strategic way of thinking grounded in financial rationale.

SKK GSB attracted him through its globally aligned curriculum and diverse student body. After completing his MBA, he moved into the mobility industry, working in sales and business strategy and using data to develop strategies. He now works on new business development.

Looking back, he identifies two key criteria that have shaped his career: technological depth and business judgment. His bachelor’s degree in computer science gave him a strong technological foundation, while SKK GSB helped him develop the language of business and learn to make decisions based on financial rationale.

“As someone who understands technology, I have gradually moved into designing businesses,” he concluded.

He believes that one of the most valuable aspects of the MBA was the opportunity to see business challenges from different perspectives.

“When my classmates defined a company's crisis, there were various ways of defining the issue. While I was looking at systems and structures first, those who were working in manufacturing, finance, and marketing looked first at money flow or brand assets. Therefore, I realized that my conclusion would be based on my work background, rather than being the only correct answer. I also learned that finance, marketing and operations are not different areas: they are just different aspects of one business,” he explained.

This broader perspective has continued to influence Minhyoung’s work in the mobility industry. “The MBA program made me see the technology and revenue model, operating structures, and risk management at once. In strategy and new business in particular, we need to persuade senior management with logic, and the MBA helped me develop this language.”

Reflecting on whether he achieved the goals he had set before entering the program, Minhyoung noted: “I was able to earn the CFA by building on the knowledge and insights I gained through the SKK GSB MBA program. I currently design business structures, so I can confidently say that I have achieved the goal I set before enrolling in the program.”

He also emphasized that the value of the MBA extended beyond what he learned in the classroom. “I can say the MBA program did not simply provide the right answer, but taught me how to organize the business experience that I already had. The global curriculum was a big help in my career path, but the other half came from my classmates, from whom I was able to learn a great deal,” he added.
