Span of Control as a Strategic Lever for Firm Growth
Date: 2025-11-19
Time: 4:30 PM – 5:50 PM
Venue: 90403 International Hall
Speaker: Prof. Jaeho Choi (Hong Kong University of Science & Technology)
The study develops a computational model that formalizes how the span of control dynamically shapes firm growth through trade-offs inherent in organizational information processing. When cognitive constraints on attention and evaluation interact, an intermediate span of control emerges as optimal, and this optimum gradually narrows as firms grow—reflecting a shift from scarcity of ideas to scarcity of time. The results highlight the span of control as a strategic instrument for managing evolving growth constraints under uncertainty.
