- [Financial News] Sungkyunkwan University sets the remote learning standard for higher education
- Sungkyunkwan University sets the remote learning standard for higher education Due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19, remote classes using online platforms are no longer an option but rather are a necessity. Unfortunately, the quality of remote classes in some schools has been questionable. However, the remote classes at Sungkyunkwan University showed that remote learning can also be effective and conducive to higher learning. For the past 10 years, there had been a large effort by Sungkyunkwan University in studying and preparing for online classes and this effort has benefited the university during the unexpected situation of COVID-19. Courses are offered in a hybrid system, functioning in both real-time online and offline classes. Immediate storage of the learning management system (LMS) has also been adopted. Furthermore, the establishment of a studio for professors to produce learning content has also been a driving force behind the success of Sungkyunkwan University's remote classes. ■I-campus: The driving force for high quality remote learning The visit to the Sungkyunkwan University campus started off at an online production studio located on the third floor of the Hall of Economics. This is where professors are able to produce educational content for remote learning. Upon entering the studio, we encountered two professional producers who were in charge of editing the lecture videos made by the professors. Inside the production studio, there were two lecture classrooms, with each room equipped with cameras and large electronic blackboards. Professors are able to check the lecture screen while checking the prompt mounted on the camera. Electronic blackboards have the ability to create video content as well as show written notes by the professor, allowing for effective teaching. The next visit was to the self-studio on the third floor of the Central Library. The self-studio is smaller than the online production studio, but this is where professors produce lecture content in a smaller space. A recording room is also present on the fourth floor of the Business School. Sungkyunkwan University operates two online studios and two self-studios in both the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus, and the Natural Sciences Campus, respectively. The Sungkyunkwan University classroom has real time recording and support for streaming (webex) and on-off mixing with classes. Inside the classroom, acrylic partitions are used for social distancing, and students who are taking the class online can be observed through a digital screen. Lecture materials and images are stored in the learning management system (LMS) called I-Campus. Students taking a course can re-watch a lecture using I-campus at any time. Sungkyunkwan University has 244 recorded courses currently for the second semester, for both the Humanities and Social Science Campus and the Natural Science Campus, and this number is the highest among four-year universities in Korea. The first generation of Sungkyunkwan University’s I-campus began in 2002-2008, followed by the second generation in 2009-2019. The third generation (current) of I-campus has been in operation since March of 2020. Throughout the years, I-campus has not only been a platform for sharing class materials, but it has also been a base for interactive learning in the form of assignments, quizzes, discussions, saved lectures, and real-time lectures. This has been even more prominent in the third generation of I-campus, given the current COVID-19 situation. "The fact that we have been studying and preparing for remote classes since more than a decade ago is the driving force behind dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic," said Kim Dong-wook, head of the university’s Academic Affairs Division. "We are operating in various committees (advisory, professional, copyright, and working-level committees) to support the operation of remote classes and to manage content quality, and we are also doing our best to improve the quality of the remote classes." ■Satisfaction level of students and professors is also high To confirm the effectiveness of the hybrid class (simultaneous online and offline), we visited the International Hall of Sungkyunkwan University to observe an SKK Graduate School of Business (SKK GSB) class. Seven students were physically in the classroom, and seven others were taking the class online. Raunaq Pungaliya, the Vice-Dean of GSB and the instructor of the lecture, conducted the class by asking questions from time to time not only to the students in the classroom but also to the students online. This helped push the students both online and offline to have class interaction and to maintain a high level of concentration, which allowed the students to really absorb the material of the lecture. "Of course, it's good to have classes with everyone in the classroom, but I think we have found a solution to combine online and offline classes in a special situation called 'COVID-19,'" said Vice Dean Raunaq. "The satisfaction of the classes is also high in that students have high voluntary participation." When asked about the hybrid system, Jung Young Deok (39), a student of SKK GSB, replied, “Foreign students who are taking the same classes with me could have difficulties such as having to self-quarantine when entering Korea, but we are able to solve these issues through online and offline hybrid classes. We are satisfied with the quality of the lectures as well as the flexible action of the school administration system.” Original full article in Korean: https://www.fnnews.com/news/202010201438589475

- Meet the new FMBA Vice-President for the Class of 2022: Alexander Pease
- Alexander Pease, whose work experience before coming to SKK GSB includes the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, is now the newly elected vice-president for the Full-time MBA Class of 2022. He shares the exciting story of his life and talks about his plans as FMBA class vice-president. Q)Where are you from, and where did you grow up? I am from western New York. I grew up nearby Niagara Falls and Buffalo along Lake Ontario. My hometown is located close to the Canadian border, where you can see a great view of the Toronto skyline! Q)Any interesting and fun facts you want to share with us? My hometown is in a rural area, and I grew up on a small farm. Country life was all I knew until I moved to Seoul in 2016. Since then, I have lived in Korea for the majority of the last four years. Q)What was your major in your undergraduate college? Did you always want to go to business school? My undergraduate major was international business management, with a minor in international studies. Going to business school was always in my mind. I had seen successful business people growing up, and I wanted to become like them one day. Pursuing an MBA felt like the next step to pursue that goal. Q)Why did you choose to pursue an MBA degree in Korea? I was an exchange student at Myongji University for about 14 months from 2016 to 2017. During my exchange program, I gained unforgettable experiences thanks to the people I met, the places I visited, and the things I did. After that, Korea felt like a second home, and Korean culture was, at times, more natural for me than American culture. After completing an internship at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, I made up my mind to pursue Korean as my second language. In the years since then, I have felt that earning an MBA degree in Korea would be the best stepping stone for me to build a successful career here. Q)What drew you to SKK GSB? What was the key part of the school’s MBA program that led you to choose this particular business school? I had also considered pursuing a Master's degree in international studies. But after meeting successful alumni of SKK GSB, I became interested in the program. After doing some research, the rigorous curriculum schedule of separate modules and intensive weeks attracted me to the program. Ultimately, both seeing the results of an SKK GSB education from a respected colleague and reading about the curriculum led me to choose this business school. Q)What excites you most about getting your MBA at SKK GSB? I am most excited about participating in the Applied Business Projects (ABP) next year in the spring semester. I think it is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in real-world consulting projects and to find a direction for my job search. Q)Please share your first month of SKK GSB experience. My first month have been great! It’s a challenging and demanding program, but I can feel the rewards already. I will continue to work hard every day and meet the challenge of the program. Q)Why did you want to join the Student Government? I wanted to join the Student Government to become a bridge to connect international students and Korean students. I hope to be able to inspire each of us so that we can all come together to work not as individuals but as a 36-person team. I believe that creating the type of atmosphere where we care about our own goals as well as our collective goals is extremely important for an MBA since networking and cooperating are critical to our future success and ventures. Q)What would you like to accomplish as FMBA vice president? Your goals and objectives? As vice-president, my goals and objectives are to help our classmates reach their goals both in and outside the classroom. Fostering an atmosphere of comradery within our class and forging lifelong friendships and memories for all of us is my end goal. Q)Can you share your plans for the year? Given the challenges under the COVID-19 pandemic, I would like to hold small meetings as frequently as possible. As we all have designated teams for the semester from SKK GSB, we have been able to become close to team members. I think that having small meetings with people in different teams and having lunch or coffee together will also help us get to know everyone in the class. I will also closely work with the president to try and plan any events where all classmates can attend either online or offline. COVID-19 has certainly created a lot of limitations and barriers for our SKK GSB class. I believe that if we work together, we can overcome all of the problems and can find a way to succeed! Q)Where can people get in touch with you? People can find me in the SKK GSB study room in the basement or on LinkedIn. Feel free to reach out! - Meet the new FMBA President for the Class of 2022: Stina Tam
- Stina Tam, FMBA Class of 2022, is taking up her role as the newly elected president of the Full-time MBA student government. Here Stina shares her story and talks about her plans as FMBA class president. Q)Where are you from, and where did you grow up? Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, I am a Chinese Canadian! Montreal is the French part of Canada. So, I do also speak French! Q)Any interesting and fun facts you want to share with us? I like hiking! I don’t consider myself a very sporty person, but upon arriving in Korea and discovering that the land is filled with 80% of mountains, I came to like hiking! I can now say that hiking became one of my favorite hobbies. Q)What was your major in your undergraduate college? Did you always want to go to business school? My undergraduate major was marketing, with a minor in sociology. To be honest, I had no concrete plan to go to business school. But studying the field of business has always been in the back of my mind since a very young age, thanks to my parents, who own a restaurant. Q)Why did you choose to pursue an MBA degree in Korea? Back in 2016, I came to Korea as an exchange student and found myself falling in love with the country! Therefore, I wanted to further my career goals in Korea by pursuing my MBA degree here. I am glad that I can combine my interest in business with my interest in Korea. Q)What drew you to SKK GSB? What was the key part of the school’s MBA program that led you to choose this particular business school? I researched many of the business schools in Korea. Upon learning about each school’s program courses and academic networks, SKK GSB became my top choice. It became more certain after I interviewed with SKK’s dean, as I received the feeling that the staff do value students and want to nurture them into great talents. Q)What excites you most about getting your MBA at SKK GSB? The opportunity to meet an extensive network of people from across the globe and from different fields and industries! Q)Please share your first month of SKK GSB experience. My first month at SKK GSB flew by like the speed of lightning because everything happened just so quickly. But I was able to settle in Seoul well, and I got to meet amazing classmates during the orientation. So far, it has been a smooth transition. Besides, thanks to the opportunity of learning Korean before the program, my everyday life in Korea is very nice. I am able to do things on my own without any difficulties and even adapted to the “quick (bbali-bbali)” culture. Q)Why did you want to join the Student Government? From the very moment when the president from the Class of 2021 came to talk to us during the orientation about his role, I knew I wanted to bring positive contributions to the Class of 2022 as the next president. Despite the current pandemic and the many changes required to adapt to the “new normal,” I wanted to join the student government in order to ensure that each student gets the best opportunity to network, feel included, and have the best possible experience during the program. Q)What would you like to accomplish as FMBA president? Your goals and objectives? One of my goals as a class president is to make sure that everyone in the Class of 2022 feels represented and can reach me if they need help. Secondly, I hope to create opportunities for the FMBA cohort to socialize and expand their networks, not just within the university but also outside. Q)Can you share your plans for the year? I have plans to hold small gatherings to mix up the groups of people so that they can truly get to know each other. One example is to have cultural exchanges for international students to learn more about the Korean culture and for our fellow Korean counterparts to experience diversity in the classroom. Given the challenges under the COVID-19 pandemic, I also plan on Online Mini Job Fair or a Zoom Movie Night, where all students can join online and still have a great time together. Q)Where can people get in touch with you? Always welcome to message me on my LinkedIn! I enjoy meeting new people and learning about them! Irene So and Bomi Kim, SKK GSB PR Committee, Class of 2022

- [Maeil Business News] Iseul Choi, PMBA'21
- Iseul, Choi, PMBA/ Group SEB Korea Ms. Iseul Choi works in the marketing department of Group SEB Korea, which markets household goods under the Tefal brand and WMF premium kitchenware. She is currently completing her last semester at SKK GSB’s Professional MBA. For 2 years, Iseul has been taking MBA classes in the evenings after work, but she doesn't think it is tiring. As she notes, "I was able to apply the management knowledge and skills I learned at school to my current job right away," adding, "Thanks to this, I have increased my work performance and confidence." Iseul lists courses taught 100% in English as the most important reason for choosing SKK GSB. "Working at a multinational company, we are conducting most meetings, data preparation, and strategy presentations in English," she says. "Being able to conduct MBA studies in English will not only be good for use at our current jobs but also help us manage our future careers." The possibility to follow the dual degree track and obtain a second degree from Indiana University Kelley School of Business also feature prominently in her choice to attend SKK GSB, as does the opportunity to expand her professional networks. As she notes, "SKK GSB has a high percentage of students who work for multinational companies, and I expected that interacting with them and studying with them will help networking a lot." Iseul highlights the fact that at SKK GSB she was able to gain new perspectives by interacting with people from various backgrounds. "We can talk about industry cases with coworkers at work, but with SKK GSB colleagues, we were able to learn from following three steps: learning, applying, and expanding actual cases." As for which class she was most impressed by at SKK GSB’s Professional MBA, Iseul chooses Marketing Planning: "We were able to have a broad view of the business as a whole by analyzing data with team members and mapping out strategies accordingly to check consumer responses, market share, and KPIs across the company. I am a marketing manager within the company, but I have a habit of being interested in and trying to understand the company's overall strategy, profit and loss, and operating reports." Iseul emphasizes passion as very important for prospective applicants who are thinking about entering an MBA. As advice to students that are just starting their MBA journey she advises, "The results of the MBA course depend on how deeply you think about your career, how focused you are in class, and how you interact with various friends." - Meet Professor Gokce Basbug
- My name is Gokce Basbug. I am from Turkey. For my education, I first studied psychology in Turkey, and then I went to the United States for my PhD degree. I received my PhD from MIT Sloan School of Management. I study work and employment issues. My main hobby is playing soccer. I’ve been playing soccer since I was five years old. Here, in Seoul, I’m a member of Seoul Sports Social. I play regularly with my friends from this group. I am very happy to be part of it. We not only play soccer but also meet regularly for drinks. It is a cliché but real. Turkey can be defined as a bridge between Europe and Asia. It is not only located between these two continents but also it possesses cultural ingredients from both continents, combines them and produces a unique culture of its own. The Seoul of Turkey is Istanbul, which is the most populous city and the heart of the country. Istanbul has a huge historical background going back to 5000 BC. As a person who has had the chance to see many cities around the world, I can say Istanbul is one of the most beautiful ones. My first feeling when I visited for the job talk was feeling like at home. People on the street, their attitudes and behaviors, the design of streets and buildings made me feel like I was at home. When I went back to Boston after the talk, the first thing I told my wife was that she would feel at home if we end up living in Korea. And now it turns out that I was true. She is really enjoying here. She attended SKKU’s Korean Language Program. Thanks to the program, now she can easily communicate in Korean and help me figure things out sometimes. I visited Jeju with my wife. It was a great experience. We like quiet places, so we decided to visit during the Winter break. We walked around, ate a lot of seafood, and did some hiking. We really enjoyed it and we are looking forward to visiting again. Sometimes Korean. I don’t have any problem communicating with people on the street, in a shop, or at a restaurant. You can easily interact with people using your body language. But, sometimes, when I have some work to do at a bank or at a hospital, it sometimes becomes difficult to understand each other. My most memorable event was when I finished my first semester of teaching and read my first students’ feedback about me and the class. As a junior professor who just completed his first teaching experience, those words of my students were big gifts to me. I still get emotional when I remember that. My priority in my career at this point is to publish papers in academic journals. This will not only help me build my identity as a scholar but also contribute to my school’s prestige and reputation. To me, education is a process of discovering and learning together. I don’t believe in the idea that the teacher is the sole giver and the student is the sole receiver. I think this approach does not fit into a graduate school. Graduate programs such as Master’s or PhD programs are places where teachers and students need to produce knowledge together. Therefore, I really expect my students to transform from being a consumer of knowledge to a producer of knowledge and to be part of the knowledge creation process. "I can advise them to invest in themselves as much as possible by gaining new knowledge and capabilities. This is the time for them to furnish themselves with new skills. After graduation, because of work or family issues, they may not have the time and strength to invest in themselves. So, take advantage of these school years as much as possible.” Lead more story in SungKyunWebzine: https://webzine.skku.edu/skkuzine/section/people02.do

- [What's On] Internship on Summer Vacation! - Nikki, FMBA'21
- Interview with Nikki about Summer Internship Internships are very popular with students who need to gain valuable work or research experience. An intern can work part-time or full time at a company for a specified period. Today, SKK GSB PR committee was very delighted to invite Nikki to share her experience in Korea and obtain life lesson including how to find a summer internship in Korea. We will find out how the internship benefits her. Nikki: Hi, my name is Nikki from India. I have been living in Korea since 2019. Before joining SKK GSB, I was working as a Business Development Manager at a startup in India. While working, I realized that I needed a more specific set of skills like Management, Negotiation and Digital Marketing to attain a well-established and stable position in my career. Since my academic background was Physics, switching into an entirely different field like a Full-time MBA was a considerable investment for me in terms of time and money. We heard that you received a great internship through Hire diversity. What benefit will the internship bring to you and how it affect your career plan? Nikki: Yes, I found the internship job description. at Hire diversity and I discussed with Mr. Sim about job description because luckily that profile was matching with my CV. He helped me a lot in finalizing the working contract and in obtaining immigration permission. Now, I am handling the Marketing area for the Indian community in Korea. Prof. Eric’s Marketing simulation helped me a lot in understanding the working process in the Marketing department. Currently, I am handling the Marketing through Facebook, Google Ads, Instagram Ads, and YouTube Ads. I create promotional Ads on these channels. The internship helps me to gain valuable work experience, develop a network with professionals, refine my skills, and in addition, receive financial compensation. Through this internship, I got an opportunity to travel locally to different places in Korea like Suwon, Gimhae, every weekend. I strongly feel that having hands-on experience will positively affect my career after MBA graduation. What did you learn from SKK GSB? What do you want to do after graduation? Nikki: SKK GSB turns out to be a magical platform for me. I am studying with students from11 different nationalities for group projects and students who have long experience in big MNC’s. I learned time management skills, as we must finish assignments and group projects within tight deadlines. Apart from that, negotiations, communications, and active participation skills improved my personality a lot. In terms of career guidelines, the SKK GSB program is very well defined and helps you to gain confidence before entering working life in a company. Prof. Raunaq and others are always available to listen and guide us through every confusing phase. After graduating from SKK GSB, I want to work on combining the profile of Data Analytics and Digital Marketing. Together with the wonderful experience in Korea, it also helps me to develop my long-term Career plan in the U.S.A or Australia. I believe I would acquire most of the required skills of my dream job before graduating, as the SKK GSB course work is highly oriented towards the latest Job requirements.
