- Fall 2020 Application: FMBA Student Testimonials
- Fall 2020 Application FMBA Student Testimonials by Yin LIN, FMBA’21 New semester is coming. SKK GSB is currently recruiting MBA students for this year. The MBA/MS application deadline is May 15th. It is not a quiet easy to explore Graduate school of business abroad for students looking for higher education. Here is Yin Lin, SKK GSB Full-Time MBA Class of 2021, talks about how she got to know SKK GSB and to apply for the program. The following application review explains the reason why FMBA student, Yin chose to study MBA at SKK GSB in South Korea. -Why did you decide to study in South Korea? Yin: There are three reasons why I decided to join SKK GSB MBA program. Firstly, Asian culture is more familiar and attractive to me. In South Korea, the creativity behind every product is excellent and Korean is highly organized, efficient, detail oriented and able to create highly popular products in varied industries. Also, Korea is located in East Asia, which is close to my hometown, making it more convenient for my family to visit me. Besides, South Korea has made remarkable economic growth, called ‘the miracle of the Han River’ after the Korean War in 1953. For instance, the gross national product per person in 1963 was only USD$100. However, it soared to more than USD$16,000 in 2005. South Korea was ranked in the top GDP among Asia’s four dragons in 2014 and is known as one of the world’s top 10 trading powers, especially for its globally competitive export ability. The great entrepreneurship built with courage, faith and creativity of South Korea have created so many globalized enterprises, such as Samsung, LG, Hyundai; Samsung’s innovation has led the world’s technology and semiconductor industry. Last but not least, the global influence of South Korea’s entertainment business, such as K - POP, Korean movies, Korean food and Korean fashion is like another miracle. To be sure, after the miracle of Hallyu, Korean’s creativity and the spirit of challenge will have a third miracle soon. That’s why I want to deeply study and earnestly understand Korea's diverse and successful business mode, and conscientiously implement these values into my future career. -Why did you choose to enter Sungkyunkwan University SKK GSB Yin: For my MBA major, I did specific research on various universities. More than six hundred years, Sungkyunkwan University used to be the best educational institution of the Joseon Dynasty. It has held a special place in the history of Korea, in carrying out its mission of ‘Action-Based Learning.’ The school’s educational tradition has emphasized the four principles: benevolence, righteousness, propriety and wisdom, which is very close to Chinese Confucian culture. I know that the age-old values have been modified, and especially since Samsung Group became a school consortium in 1996, it has gradually promoted a long - term development strategy. The excellent faculty and abundant business case studies were judged to be the biggest advantages of Sungkyunkwan University’s MBA program. In addition, it launched the only American MBA program in Korea in 2004. Its Full - Time MBA program has been ranked 1st in Korea and in the top 1% in the world since 2012 by The Financial Times Global MBA Rankings. Sungkyunkwan University also reached a cooperation agreement with MIT School of Business and Indiana Kelley School of Business in the US, Peking Guanghua, and IE Business School in Spain. "For all these reasons, I decided to join the full – time MBA program in Sungkyunkwan University." Yin Lin, SKK GSB PR Committee, Class of 2021

- [Maeil Business News] 'Good Professor, Good Lecture'
- Maeil Business Newspaper 'Good Professor, Good Lecture' Prof. Raunaq Pungaliya at SKK GSB Sungkyunkwan University As Korea enters the AI-driven 4th industrial revolution, businesses will require managers with both a clear understanding of business priorities and deep analytical skills to make business sense of the data around them. Top-tier managers with this skill set are rare and highly prized throughout the world. Moreover, as the business environment evolves, many professionals are concerned that their existing education will become obsolete. Business Analytics is one of the fastest growing fields worldwide. According to Professor Raunaq Pungaliya of SKK GSB , “The reason for this is simple – businesses are creating an incredibly rich amount of data. Good businesses have always strived to use data to make better business decisions, but the very best businesses view data as a means of competitive advantage.” In order to fill this important gap in business education in Korea, Professor Raunaq Pungaliya of SKK GSB is helping to introduce a new and cutting-edge MS in Business Analytics (MS BA) specially designed with working professionals in mind. The academic curriculum for the program has been carefully curated with the needs of both large businesses and startups, so graduates of the program will be ready to contribute in analytics roles almost immediately. Specifically, students will be trained not only in hard skills such as Python, R, AI-based predictive models, and big data tools and techniques, but also more importantly in how these tools can be readily applied to business applications. He strongly believes that effective teaching and student achievement best takes place when students are engaged in and excited about learning, and when they can connect their learning to their own lives and the real world. Thus, as with all GSB programs, the MS in Business Analytics will draw heavily upon SKK GSB’s core teaching philosophy of action-based learning or learning by doing as students will be required to think critically, analyze, and develop analytical solutions to solve real business problems throughout their coursework and in a capstone Applied Business Project. Professor Pungaliya teaches topics related to Investments, Capital Markets, and International Finance at SKK GSB to MBA and MS students, and will also be teaching FinTech and Banking Analytics in the MS BA program. Emilie Touvet, MMS exchange student from EDHEC Business School, said “Professor Pungaliya is a challenging and attentive professor, truly available for his students. His class was lively, with a large variety of content and a genuine student involvement through questions and group news presentation.” Professor Raunaq Pungaliya is an Associate Professor of Finance and the Faculty-Chair of Full-Time MBA and MS Programs at SKK Graduate School of Business at Sungkyunkwan University. He joined SKK Graduate School of Business in 2010. Since then he has been a recipient of multiple teaching excellence awards in 2011, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019. His research work focuses on corporate banking and debt markets and has been presented at major conferences such as the American Finance Association and the American Accounting Association Annual Meetings and published in leading academic journals such as the Accounting Review, Management Science, and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. - [Who We R] Whitely Pannell, FMBA'21
- Whitely Pannell, FMBA’21, discovered SKK GSB through the law school at Indiana University. Now she is taking to the next level for her JD and will get dual degree at SKK GSB – Indiana University Maurer School of Law. "I discovered Sungkyunkwan University Graduate School of Business (SKK GSB) through my law school at Indiana University. SKK GSB and Indiana have a strategic partnership where law students complete their first year of law school and journey to Seoul to study business for a year." "The law students complete the program on an accelerated schedule and return to Indiana to complete their law degree. I saw this as an amazing opportunity because it offers the chance to gain an additional degree in a field that will assist me during my career." "I also understood the benefit of having an international experience at a globally ranked business school. Since being at SKK GSB, I’ve become more culturally aware and I’ve learned how to work and communicate with people from all over the world. This will certainly be a benefit when entering a job market that is continually becoming more globalized." "Prior to coming to SKK GSB, I had no knowledge about business. I studied politics and pre-law during undergrad and it was a natural progression for me to pursue law school next, but I always thought about the possibility of pursuing a joint JD/MBA. It was almost fate that this opportunity was revealed to me." "During my time here I’ve taken multiple classes in all fields applicable to business: finance, marketing, management, and accounting. I’ve learned so much about economics, monetary and fiscal policy, marketing and branding, investing, how accounts work, and how different markets operate." "The knowledge and business principles that I’ve gained from these classes has without a doubt strengthened my skill set and has helped mold me into a stronger candidate for the American workforce." "After I complete this year at SKK GSB, I will go to New York to embark on my summer internship before returning to Indiana in the fall." "I still have two years of law school to complete. Law school is normally three years, but my decision to pursue an MBA added an extra year to my educational journey." "I will graduate in 2022 with my other three classmates who are also SKK GSB fellows: @Michelle Johnston @Michael Osborne @Samuel Russell. We will be the only students from our law school class who will graduate with both a Juris Doctorate and a Masters in Business Administration." - Whitley Pannell, FMBA'21 #SKKGSB #SKKU #MBA #FMBA #JD #kellyschoolofbusiness #indianauniversity #성균관대 #성균관대학교 #대학원 #경영전문대학원

- Kudos Professor Chengwei Wang
- Professor Chengwei Wang's paper, "Investing in Low-Trust Countries: On the Role of Social Trust in the Global Mutual Fund Industry," has just been accepted for publication in Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis. The paper describes that social trust, in mitigating contracting incompleteness, may have an important effect on the activeness and effectiveness of delegated portfolio management by using a complete sample of worldwide open-end mutual funds. Also explore the impact of trust in general and the role of the two mechanisms of trust in particular—i.e., trust in the market and trust in managers—in the global mutual fund industry. JFQA is considered to be one of the top-tier academic journals in the discipline of finance published by the Michael G. Foster School of Business at the University of Washington. Big congratulations, and many thanks to Professor Chengwei Wang for her continued contribution to SKK GSB! + Link to Research : https://gsb.skku.edu/en/Faculty_Research/Insights.do mode=view&articleNo=94239&article.offset=0&articleLimit=10

- Interview with students from Dartmouth-Tuck and IU Kelley school
- From early Jan 2020 to early Mar 2020, six American students from Dartmouth-Tuck and IU Kelley school attended an exchange student program at SKK GSB. Nicole Nava (Tuck, Class of 2020) and Alice YI (Kelley, Class of 2020) shared their feelings about their Study Abroad Program in SKK GSB in Korea. Why did you choose SKK GSB to study abroad? Nicole: I chose SKK GSB because I wanted the opportunity to live and study in Asia. After enjoying an undergrad exchange program in Europe, I really wanted the chance to live in a new environment. I have been to Seoul before and absolutely loved it! It's a wonderful city filled with many things to do, and I knew this would be a once in a lifetime chance! Alice: I chose to study at SKKU because it was an opportunity for me to live in Korea. While I’ve visited Seoul many times before, this would be a new experience for me to live and study here. What impressed you most in Korea and SKKU? Nicole: Besides food, I would have to say the overall infrastructure and community in Seoul and SKK GSB have impressed me the most. Coming from New York, I am consistently impressed by public transport and the respect everyone has for each other and the environment around them. Community is a huge thing for me and is the major reason I chose Tuck as my full time MBA program. I am happy to find a similar feeling here at SKK GSB. Alice: The food and transportation system always impress me in Korea. Delivery is incredibly fast and there are so many options. How did you feel about the class and what did you learn from SKK GSB? Nicole: Everyone in class has been so welcoming! I'm taking both full time and executive MBA courses and have loved all of my classmates. Everyone comes with a different experience, and I have thoroughly enjoyed how international the classes are. Alice: The classes I took in SKK GSB are not too difficult for me. It’s been a great experience to learn with classmates from different cultures and backgrounds. Yin Lin, SKK GSB PR Committee, Class of 2021
