[Day 1 : Lecture in IE Business School, Madrid]
Global Competition in a multipolar world
: From Marco Polo to Trump by Professor Fernando Cortinas.
Carly Fiorina, former HP CEO and one of the Republican candidates for US presidency, has cited in her interview that her study of medieval history at University helps her a lot to cope better with business complexities and she derived a lot of insights from history to manage big organizations and I can understand what she meant by that and see the unparalleled value of the ‘Consilience’ approach from the lecture covering history, evolutions far beyond just topics of the economy.
With the quest for “Money and Glory”, many of great powers, initiatives and people have risen and fllen. Marco Polo is an outstanding figure who can still be a great role model for an entrepreneur in the 21st century where uncertainty and complexities are the only unchanged characteristics of the business environment.
Also, the Silk Road is the best example of entrepreneurial values and spirit at work even in the 21st century, China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative aims to revive these "money and glory" networks in a new era. Both risks and opportunities lie ahead from this transition of global institutions to regional economic blocks. As business leader in a new era, we all need to be daring and set foot into the future just like Marco Polo did in the 14th Century.
